Trout on a 12-Weight: An Offshore Fly-fisherman’s Odyssey into Tiny Tailwaters

Trout on a 12-Weight: An Offshore Fly-fisherman’s Odyssey into Tiny Tailwaters By Scott Leon

The transition from a hard-core offshore fly-fisherman chasing marlin and tuna around the world to the more refined and delicate world of presenting dry flies to rising trout in many ways is far more difficult than the reverse. These are some of the lessons I’ve learned along the way— most the hard way.

Scott Leon Bio:

Scott Leon is a jack-of-all-trades and a master of none. He grew up in the competitive world of tournament bill fishing where he picked up a fly rod to catch bait along the way. He has been lucky enough to fish all over the world and assist other professional captains and crews in learning how to fly-fish offshore and nearshore waters world-wide for decades. Maybe without surprise, he spent some time in the Navy before spending way too much time in school, earning a slough of useless degrees. He was the editor for Fly Fishing in Salt Waters magazine for years, learning the inside-and-outs of an industry and sport he had only previously participated in as a ardent enthusiast. He has published dozens of articles in numerous magazines around the world and has more than a few cover photos to his credit. He is advisory staff for Temple Fork Outfitters and pro staff for a number of other fishing-related companies as well. He was a lead instructor at the oldest and largest casting and fly fishing school in the southern US and he ran a charter boat, specializing in offshore fly fishing in San Diego for nearly a decade until the madness of all the downtime drove him to write a series of novels that only tangentially have to do with fishing. Now he’s learning that there are actually fish in freshwater, too. His degrees are still useless though.
