We will be holding our Kids Academy’s major fund raiser Friday November 7 at the Kernville Golf Course Clubhouse with no host bar at 6:00 PM and cards fly at 7:00 pm.  We’ll be paying Texas Holdem with a $25 buy-in.  Since this is a fund raiser, you’ll be able to buy –in as many times as you want, with last buy-in at the beginning of the Final Table.
Members from the other SWC Clubs are invited with the InterClub Tourney the following day.  The Team from Carson City FF has been boosting about their Texas Holdem skills and we need to show them how it’s really played.  Even the President of the SWCIFFF plays every years and “donates” his $25 in the 1st 10 minutes of play.   Wink Grin Grin
You know how important this event is to our Kids Academy program.  We need to fund next years Kids Academy and the majority of funds comes from this event.  So lets buy-in and go all in to help the kids, the future of our sport.

SSFFC Sept 13th Speaker Jack Trout

Our September speaker, Jack Trout, will describe various historical facts about the McCloud River, it’s trout, as well as other rivers and fish of Northern California.

This month, Jack Trout (now there is a name for a fisherman) will give us a history lesson. His presentation, The McCloud River Rainbows–Well Traveled Trout, will detail for us how trout, steelhead, and Salmon were shipped out all over the US & southern hemisphere. With historic pictures, rarely seen he will delve into the Aqua Train car that was built to transport fish after the completion of the transcontinental railroad. Ten of them were built. Have you ever wondered how the shad got into the Lower Sacramento River? Where the striped bass came from and how they survived the 2900 mile journey across the United States Who purchased the famous private clubs along the McCloud. Learn the history of Northern California trout from 1840 to the present and why we have rainbow trout in the Midwest. Jack has stories to tell.

Jack was born and raised in Portola, California, grew up fly fishing on Lake Davis and the Feather River and road trips with his father to the McCloud and Upper Sac. Jack’s dad, Ray, was a fishing guide at the Feather River Prep School in Graeagle & Walton’s Grizzly Boys Camp for years, where he taught and guided Leighton and Gray Hills of the Bollibokka Club on the McCloud River how to fly fish and school for their hunter safety licenses, so guiding and teaching is in the family blood.

Jack used to play sports against Mt. Shasta, Weed & McCloud area schools as a kid and later decided to move to Mount Shasta in 1994 and start a full-time local guide service. After that he started going down to guide in Chile and he met his Chilean wife Carola. They operate one of the best Chilean fly fishing guide services for one day trips and non lodge multiple day adventures. Jack guides in northern California on the Upper Sac, McCloud, Klamath, Trinity, Pit, Hat Creek and has 4 other independent guides he has worked with for years. Check out his blog adventures at www.mtshasta.com or the business site at   www.jacktrout.com.

Come and get your fill of history while being entertained with rich stories of intrigue and daring do of the early pioneers of fishing.
We will be meeting at the Fly Shop at 7:00 pm Sept 13.

June 21 SSFFC Meeting

Our June 21st speaker is my world famous cousin, Zino Nakasuji.  Zino has fished waters that most of us have only dreamed of fishing: New Zealand, Belize, River Spey, Christmas Island, etc.  One of his favorite methods of fly fishing is sight casting to difficult to catch fish.  He has become an expert on Bonefish on the flats, having spoken at our Club and Marriotts on Oahu Bonefishing.  He goes there only 3 or 4 times a year.  I know, poor guy.  Zino will be presenting fishing for Carp in the LA River and at Lake Henshaw.  He will cover everything you ever wanted to know about catching carp in the LA River: top spots, flies to use, etc.  For Lake Henshaw, you’ll find out about the hopper fishing for carp, that’s right top water action for carp.  The meeting starts at 7:00 pm at the Kernville Chamber of Commerce.
As an added bonus, come fish Sunday morning with Zino and Randy for Carp at Lake Isabella and find out how it’s done by two premiere carp fly fishers.  Catching carp is not easy.  Learn the secret techniques and flies used by the experts.  This should be a fun time!! Wink

Ring of the Rise now Public

Hi everyone,

The board has decided to make our SSFF newsletter public. We were struggling with members forgetting their passwords and not accessing it plus, Gary Silveira produces a stellar newsletter!

The next three months the Ring of the Rise will be sent to all current and past members.  Please take time to review or inquire about your membership being current. The website makes it easier to renew but it's a challenge with our everchanging renewal date. This year, April 5 at the Rendezvous.  It would be a great for our new membership chair Amy Kileen to have the opportunity to be caught up by the the Vouz.  Thank you for supporting the Southern Sierra Fly Fishers!

Ring of the Rise - January 2014

Cast it forward,

2014 RendezVous Date – April 5

Vous 2012Hi Everyone,
The 2014 Rendezvous date will be the weekend of April 5th. held at Frandy's again.  Freddy from the Fresno Club will be cooking up some great grub, just like last year and Guy Jeans and the Stoneflys will be providing the great music, just like last year.  More details will follow but I wanted everyone to reserve this weekend for our fun event.
Please participate; you'll have a great time.  This is our Club's big annual fund raiser and membership drive.  We moved the date to the spring, so that the water will be cooler and the fishing better.  We will have our C&R Tourney, river cleanup, casting contest, rod swap, raffles, auctions, BBQ dinner and entertainment.  ALWAYS A FUN TIME!!!.
We'll be setting up on-line applications in the next few weeks.  Beverly, at Frandy’s is ready to take your camping reservations.
See you there.
